2011 Candidate Statement: Matt Disney

Information technology is dynamic. That is one of the reasons it is such an exciting field. But that also means that system administration is dynamic. And so we see the needs of the system administration community changing. That’s why I am running for the LOPSA board. I would love to tell you I have this…

2011 Candidate Statement: Jesse Trucks

Professionals. Trainers. Leaders. Mentors. Friends.

What do all these people have in common? They are all system administrators.

I can easily think of several examples of people fulfilling these roles among the membership of the League of Professional System Administrators (LOPSA). Those of us who are already members know this. However, not everyone outside LOPSA knows this about system administrators — yet. As part of our mission here in LOPSA, we reach out to the larger community beyond the boundaries of our membership. I have worked from the moment I joined LOPSA to evangelize our message to the greater community that we serve; to educate others on our professionalism; and to improve our understanding of what it means to be a professional system administrator. I continue to do this work, and I will work ever harder at growing awareness of both our existence and our professionalism.

2011 Candidate Statement: Ski Kacoroski

I have enjoyed serving you for the past 2 years and would be honored to serve for 2 more years. Two years ago I said

“They say it takes a village to raise a child. Well it takes a community to create a good system admin. A community that provides training, mentoring and ethical guidance; career path resources such as job boards, certifications, and leadership opportunities; business resources such as insurance, legal, and advertising; advocating for its members with local and national governments; and face to face meetings to create a web of trust amoung its members. A community that benefits society by being the go to resource on system administration issues, certifying that its members have a basic level of competency, and creating a larger web of trust with other groups in society. I feel that LOPSA is that community. “

2011 Candidate Statement: Nadine Miller

My name is Nadine Miller; those of you who frequent the LOPSA irc channel may only know me by my nick, “vraptor.” I’ve been involved as a member in various System Administration organizations since I turned onto branch my career path. In fact, my first position as a UNIX admin was as a direct result of attending BayLISA meetings in the 1990’s, so I am fully aware of the value of a strong system administration community.

As a freshman board member, I will immerse myself in learning as much about the current members, projects, and board members of LOPSA as I can, and will pitch in to work wherever my skills and aptitudes allow. In keeping with my belief that communication skills are integral to system administrator and organizational success, I will focus on the following areas:

2011 Candidate Statement: Philip Kizer

To start with: a few items about me, I am a current board member and also President. I have been a sysadmin for 2 decades, and in just the last decade I have been a sysadmin for a large university, for a tiny company of amazing programmers, and as support for a variety of non-profit…

2011 Candidate Statement: William Bilancio

There’s been a change at LOPSA recently.  Less talking, more doing.  My name is William Bilancio and I am proud to be part of that change.

Recent accomplishments:

  • 2 new chapters: I helped LOPSA start NYC, and Baltimore/DC chapters by sharing my experience from running LOPSA New Jersey.
  • 3 successful conferences: I chaired the inaugural PICC 2010, mentored Cascadia IT 2011, and coordinated the hotel/food and audio visual contracts and getting all the trainers for PICC 2011.  All three were profitable before the doors opened.  A combined total of more than 150 new LOPSA memberships were gained and put over $9,000 in LOPSA’s bank account.  Both events are now annual.
  • First web-site upgrade in 5 years.  With Dan Rich, a huge effort to upgrade a highly customized CMS to a standard release, without losing any content, accounts, or data.  In doing so, the membership and renewal system is working again.
  • Hosted the LOPSA board retreat at my office in NJ to save money.
  • Member and chair of the LOPSA Education Committee since 2005, coordinating our efforts at SCALE, OLF and more.

2011 Candidate Statement: Chris St. Pierre

For starters: I’m an Emacs mage (two more levels and I’m a wizard!) learning vi, and a Perl guru who mostly writes Python these days. That should tell you a lot about me right there. In my time as a member of LOPSA, I’ve served on the Tech Team and the Education Committee, which gave…

Designing a Robust Monitoring System

Reading Ted Dziuba’s article Monitoring Theory article, I was reminded of several conventions that I have developed over the years to help with monitoring servers, network devices, software services, batch processes, etc. First, break down your data points into levels so that you can decide how to route them. Second avoid interrupt driven technology like…

2011 Candidate Statement: John Boris

I want to thank those who asked me to run for the LOPSA Board. I have been a member of LOPSA since its inception. During the early years of LOPSA I was just a member that used the mailing list and web site to help resolve issues at work. With the PICC’10 conference I answered…
