The Ohio LinuxFest Needs LOPSA Love — Please Help!

The seventh Ohio LinuxFest is happening very soon, September 25-27, 2009, in scenic Downtown Columbus, Ohio. This will be the third year that LOPSA will offer classes in partnership with OLF.

I’m a proud and active member of LOPSA but I’m also an organizer of the Ohio LinuxFest. Wearing my OLF hat I’d like to beg you FOR HELP!

We need to get the word out about OLF. It’s kinda last minute, sure, but our registration numbers are horrifically off. Is it the economy? Did we miss crucial marketing? Are people preferring to visit the G20 conference in Pittsburgh? Is it a health care crisis conspiracy? Space aliens?! I don’t know!!

The Ohio LinuxFest may be the only Open Source conference celebrating 40 Years of Unix. One of our Keynote speakers is Dr. Doug McIlroy, a Unix pioneer. And OLF isn’t just about Linux — we have talks about BSD, Python, OWASP, Drupal, OpenSim (aka OSS 2ndLife) and much much much more.

OLF is about Open Source community. It’s about encouraging people to not just use OSS but to get involved in the projects. It’s about users, programmers, writers, organizers and, of course, sysadmins. It’s “family-friendly” and the talks range from nerdy to techy to just plain fun.

How can you help? Of course the best thing you can do is come to the Ohio LinuxFest. But we realize not everyone can(1). But you can still help us get the word out!

Say something on your personal weblog. Tell your friends and coworkers. Post to your favorite geek mailing list – got a mailing list of sysadmins at work? Let them know! Follow @ohiolinux on twitter and retweet.

Do you know any podcasters? Media writers? Folks who might be interested in telling folks about OLF? Tell me about them. Send them my way! Any story that gets published or told I will do something nice for you. I’ll give you a hug. Free OpenAFS advice. I’ll be your friend forever. Name it (2).

The “Enthusiast Pass” registration for OLF is FREE. Bring your family, bring your friends, bring random strangers from the street(3). The “Supporter Pass” is $65 and gets you lunch on Saturday, a cool tshirt and other goodies.

Slipping on my LOPSA hat for a moment, I’ll remind you that the Professional Pass is only $350, for which you get your choice of TWO half-day classes by the likes of LOPSA Board members Jesse Trucks & David Parter, past favorite instructors Jonathan Billings and Chris St. Pierre, and OLF Keynote speaker Shawn Powers, plus lunch and snacks on class-day AND everything from the “Supporter Pass.”

Like LOPSA, OLF is a 501c3 corporation. Any moneys given to the Ohio LinuxFest may be tax deductible. Consult your accountant, your mileage may vary, always refrigerate, do not remove tag under penalty of law, let’s go Mets.

THANK YOU for reading this far, and DOUBLE THANK YOU if you help.

(1) We’ll really, really miss you, though!
(2) Within reason that a broke unemployed disabled sysadmin can do 🙂
(3) Hey, buddy, want some Open Source?
