Things one must remember when dealing with Dell firmware updates…
* The Dell BMC firmware updater for Linux does not run under the VMWare ESX service console. It tries and gets mostly there, but bad things happen to your BMC. For example, it will evaporate.
* The BMC on a Dell blade controls the power button. Kinda.
* Trying to boot a machine with a pissed off BMC and no CD-ROM drive into another OS is more than unplesant.
* Damn Small Linux’s ISO fits onto a FAT16 formatted USB thumb drive and boots nicely.
* Damn Small Linux does not include the required bits to make a Dell BMC firmware updater for Linux function.
* Installing Fedora Core running under QEMU is painfully slow with 256MB of RAM assigned to the guest.
* Booting Fedora Core 6 from a USB hard drive is possible, so long as you remember to remake the initrd and add a “–prelod usb-storage” when doing the remake.
* Fedora Core will happily run the Dell BMC firmware updater for Linux.. be sure to have netowrking so you can install compat-libstdc++-3.3.
