Learning to Code

Yesterday I emailed (http://lopsa.org/pipermail/discuss/2007-February/002048.html) the LOPSA discuss mailing list concerning my desire to finally learn how to program. Tom Perrine (calls himself a grey beard), responded and said that he and others of his ilk, have a hard time imagining a sysadmin that doesn’t know how to program.

When Tom started out, he spent 15 years programming before he got into systems administration. Tom has observed, these days, more people seem to be coming straight into IT operations and don’t have a programming background. He further observed that many of those people eventually make the transition from ops to tool developer, but he has never seen how that process works. Tom has encouraged me to blog about my process of learning to program so that others in the community, facing the challenge of learning to program, may learn something from my process.

I’ve never considered myself the “blogging type”, but I decided this was a good opportunity to give it a shot. So, welcome to my path toward learning how to program!
